Did Fr. Chris Alar Teach Correctly on Jews and Zionism?

Answer

Fr. Chris Alar made several serious errors in that talk. First, he misquoted Genesis 12:3. The text does not say “bless those who bless Israel.” It says “bless those who bless you,” referring to Abraham personally, not to a modern political entity or ethnic group. That verse is about the covenant with Abraham, not Zionism. Second, he claimed that the Church has condemned supersessionism. That is completely false. There has never been a single magisterial act condemning the Catholic doctrine that the New Covenant supersedes the Old. In fact, the Church teaches that the Mosaic Covenant ended when Christ established the New Covenant in His blood. Third, he stated that Catholic doctrine requires a mass conversion of ethnic Jews before the Second Coming. That is also false. Nowhere in magisterial teaching or Scripture is that promised as a future event. When Paul says in Romans 11 that “all Israel shall be saved,” he is not predicting a future national restoration of the Jews. He is referring to Israel’s salvation in Christ that began with His first coming and continues in the individual conversions of Jews who accept Him through faith and baptism. Salvation has always been through Christ alone, and that applies to Jew and Gentile alike.
