How can a Catholic defend the propitiatory sacrifice of the Mass given the new Jerome Biblical Commentary?

I did not see the debate, but if I were James White I would go straight to the new Jerome Biblical Commentary, third edition, which is endorsed by Pope Francis and which I have read page after page; it is liberal theological garbage and my guess is it does not support the propitiatory sacrifice of the Mass. Catholic Answers relies on that kind of modern scholarship, which started with liberals like Fr. Raymond Brown, who used the historical-critical method to undermine nearly every doctrine. So a Catholic defending the propitiatory sacrifice has to make the painful distinction between defending Catholicism from modern theology versus from traditional theology, and go back to the Council of Trent, because with a commentary like that as your church's major reference, you have lost the debate before you started.
