Is narcissism a valid psychological category, or is it purely a spiritual problem?

A viewer asks whether narcissism is a legitimate psychological diagnosis or whether it should be seen only as a spiritual or demonic issue.

Answer

No. That's a field of medical science that has categorized certain people with selfish tendencies or self-centered tendencies. All of them, of course, have an origin in our souls, and our souls are spiritual. You can't deny that. But there are ways to deal with certain neuroses, to categorize them with words so that we can distinguish one neurosis from another neurosis. And there's a lot of them out there. You do certain things in your life that are weird, you're going to develop certain characteristics that are considered neurotic. And they even may be psychotic, where you lose sense of reality. At least if you're neurotic, you can have some sense of reality and still have your physical or neurological malady. But this is the nature of being physical, like we talked about in the Garden of Eden. There are certain things that have a physical origin, certain diseases, certain neuroses, all kinds of things. And there are certain ways to deal with these. Some of these are physical. You can go through physical therapy. Some are mental. The body and the mind are very complicated. Sometimes it doesn't take anything, it just takes time to heal certain maladies that we have. Nothing that we try works, except time. The body has its own way of dealing with these things. But a good trained psychologist or psychiatrist, and you've got to be careful with each of those, especially the psychiatrist, because that's the area where you get into drugs curing psychological maladies. You've got to be real careful with that. And this country dispenses drugs like a gas station dispenses gas. It's just for everybody. You've got to be real careful with any drugs that affect the mind, and also the body, to a lesser extent, because of the side effects. The side effects that they are now by law required to tell you before they dispense the drug or even advertise it are sometimes worse than the disease itself. When you have a side effect that's advertised on a commercial on TV, and that side effect is death itself, and they sometimes say that, then you know you've got a problem. If a side effect is death to a drug that's supposed to cure your physical malady. And they're not ashamed to say it anymore. They just say it. So it's almost every man for himself out there. But to answer your question, yes, narcissism is a category of psychological analysis that is valuable. And it's really nice to know. John, he's got narcissistic tendencies. That's where it's coming from. Now, of course, Christians are going to look at this a lot differently than the secular world. They're going to say, OK, so where are the narcissistic tendencies coming from? Well, they come from the fact that he was born in original sin and he continues to sin because he's got bad behavior and all that, and it compounds itself. Where the two meet, the physical body and the soul, and how they combine together to create positive or negative behavior, that's a fuzzy area. And you have to let the physical side be treated by the physical things that they've discovered about the body, and let the spiritual use their things that they've discovered, and see if we can meet in the middle and go from there. And with God's blessing, we can. But let's put it this way: it's not all spiritual and it's not all physical. You can't say, well, he's narcissistic because he's just a sinful person and he's not controlling his sin. That may be true and may not be true. He may actually have a psychological tendency because of the way he was brought up with his parents. He may not have had any parents. He may have one bad parent, two bad parents. He may have grown up in the ghetto. There's all kinds of things that affect people, how they grow up and how they understand the world and all that. And he may have been poor. His family may have been sick, alcoholic, sexual problems, sexual diseases that affect people. I mean, there's just so many things that are bad that affect people's behavior. So you have to consider all of that. So just to say, well, he's narcissistic, so it's demonic. Plus, they're going to be very insensitive. Well, they're a witch because. So you have to keep those things under control. As you can see, it's a very complicated topic.
