Is the heresy of Americanism present in the MAGA movement's mindset?
Robert Sungenis holds that Americanism becomes a sin to the extent it deviates from Christian faith and morals, such as abiding more by a nation's laws than by the Church. He points to President Trump returning abortion to the states without judging it wrong in itself as an example of Americanism impinging on a Catholic's rights.
A viewer asks whether the heresy of Americanism is present in the mindset of the MAGA movement.
Answer
You will have that problem in every nation, because all of them but a few are secular nations, and when you mix faith with secular society there is no perfect balance. The MAGA movement is predominantly Christian, but Americanism can easily become a sin. I am an American citizen and that is not sinful in itself, but I can turn it into a sin, for example by claiming that I abide more by the laws of America than by my Church. Take abortion: when Trump handed it back to the states without making a moral judgment that abortion is wrong in itself, that is where Americanism impinges on my rights as a Catholic. So yes, to the extent it deviates from Christian morals and faith, Americanism is a sin.
