Commentary on the Catholic Douay-Rheims New Testament Exegeted from the Original Greek and Latin - All 4 Volumes

For the first time in Catholic history, the entire New Testament has been conservatively exegeted from the original Greek in a detailed analysis of its grammar and etymology, with occasional attention to the Vulgate's Latin and to the English of the Douay-Rheims and other translations set side by side for comparison. This is that work, complete in all four volumes.

Robert Sungenis interprets every verse from the grammar and context of the passage, bringing in key magisterial documents where they apply, along with the Fathers, the medievals, catechisms, encyclopedias, and other dogmatic sources. The exegesis follows the grammatical-historical method, with occasional recourse to typology and symbolism in the prophetic passages, and it weighs the Greek textual-critical data wherever differences in the manuscript tradition bear on a verse's meaning. Each verse carries numerous cross-references to related Scriptures, giving this Commentary the most cross-references of any Catholic Bible in history. Throughout, it holds the traditional Catholic position that all Scripture is inspired by the Holy Spirit and wholly inerrant in its history as well as its soteriology.

The reading is enriched by roughly 1,000 of the most famous biblical paintings in history, drawn from the Gothic, Romanesque, Renaissance, Baroque, and other movements, many reproduced at full length. With one of the most trusted traditional English translations, the 1609 Douay-Rheims and its 1899 American edition, alongside this Commentary, you can get behind St. Jerome's fourth-century Latin translation of the Greek texts he used for the 27 books of the New Testament. Many unclear things are made clear, and much that is already clear is enriched further. The four volumes each run roughly 700 pages on a 6 x 9 hardback frame, a study source and heirloom meant to be handed down for generations.
