Speaking in Tongues: Sign of Blessing, Sign of Judgment

"By men of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord" (1 Corinthians 14:21). At certain moments in Christian history the gift of tongues was a genuine work of the Holy Spirit, enabling men of God to speak in languages they had never learned and so to carry the Gospel to people of foreign origin, and at times to serve personal devotion to God. But tongues has another and more sobering side. When it is abused, as it was in the Corinthian church of the first century and as it commonly is today, it turns from a sign of blessing into a sign of judgment.
