Each study starts from a single passage and stays with it: Romans 6:4-5 for baptism, Hebrews 9:23-24 for the Mass, Matthew 16:18-19 for the papacy, 1Corinthians 3:15 for purgatory. Sungenis works the Greek or Hebrew wording, the immediate context and the textual evidence, then brings in the Fathers, the medievals, the councils and the 1994 Catechism. The topics are arranged alphabetically, so the book reads as a reference rather than as a course.
The subjects are the ones Catholics get pressed on: contraception, divorce and remarriage, homosexuality, the role of women, justification by faith and by good works, sola Scriptura, the Eucharist, baptism, the doctrines of Mary, original sin, predestination and free will. Several doctrines get more than one study, each from a different text, because the objection usually arrives attached to a particular verse. Protestant readings are quoted and then answered on the wording itself.
