Eleven chapters, 710 pages. Volume IV of the Catholic Apologetics Study Bible opens with a literal word-for-word translation of Genesis 1-11 made from the original Hebrew and the Greek Septuagint, running 107 pages, then footnotes the text verse by verse: the force of berashith, the sense of yalad, the day and night sequence, the naming of the animals and the birds, the knowledge of good and evil, the nakedness of Noah.
The Apologetics Commentaries at the back take the wider argument. Higher Criticism and the Documentary Hypothesis are answered; the constitution of the firmament, the waters above it, the stars and the speed of light, and the age of the earth are each worked through; the date of Adam is argued, and so is the flood, against skeptical objections. A long catalogue sets out what the Fathers and medievals actually held on the length of the Genesis day, a stationary earth, a spherical earth and creation ex nihilo, with separate sections on St. Augustine's rationes seminales and the cosmology of Blessed Hildegard. Roughly 200 pages are given over to exchanges with secular and theistic evolutionists, Dr. Niles Eldredge among them.
