Galileo Was Wrong: The Church Was Right, Volume 1

First of the three volumes, and the one that opens the scientific case. Robert Sungenis and Robert J. Bennett argue that the quarrel between Galileo and the Catholic Church was never only a disagreement about how to read Scripture, and that evidence gathered over the last hundred years, none of it available in Galileo's day, leaves the Church's position on the immobility of the Earth defensible as physics.

Chapter 1 goes back over what Copernicus and Kepler actually proposed, epicycles included. Chapter 2 takes the standard objections one at a time, twenty-five of them, from stellar parallax and stellar aberration to the Foucault pendulum, the equatorial bulge, geosynchronous satellites, retrograde motion, the Doppler effect, GPS, dark matter, dark energy and WMAP. The rest of the volume lays out the observational case (Edwin Hubble's observations, the cosmic microwave background and its alignments, quasars, gamma-ray bursts, the 2005 Sloan Digital Sky Survey) and the experimental one, reading Arago, Fresnel, Fizeau, Bradley and Airy, Hoek, Mascart, Michelson-Morley, Sagnac, Michelson-Gale, Dayton Miller and the sapphire oscillators, before asking in chapter 6 what space itself is made of.
