Two Protestant converts out of Catholicism, David Riggs and Joseph Malone of the Church of Christ, set down their reasons at length. Riggs preached his in 1962, shortly after leaving a family of twelve children and two brothers then in seminary; Malone's runs much longer and ranges from baptism by sprinkling to purgatory, indulgences, confession, celibacy, papal infallibility and the honours paid to Mary. Both papers are reprinted here in full, and Sungenis answers them line by line, so the objection and its rebuttal sit on the same page.
The premise stated at the outset is that catechesis alone does not prepare a Catholic for this, because it does not deal directly with the particular verses these arguments are built on, and that the fastest-growing Protestant congregations in America are filled largely with ex-Catholics. What the format gives a reader is the actual argument, in its author's own words and at its full strength, rather than a summary of it.
