A Flat Earth Debate: Robert Sungenis vs. Allegedly Dave

What was argued

Allegedly Dave argued that his own observations show no curvature: zoom cameras bring back ships said to be over the horizon, a laser over Lake Balaton stayed level for 12 km, gyroscopes show no motion, and NASA's footage is full of errors, so the globe rests only on the word of untrustworthy experts. Sungenis argued that magnification never brings back the whole ship, that weather satellites from many rival nations photograph a spherical Earth, and that a flat Earth model without forces to explain falling objects, the sun's changing paths and the southern stars is only a drawing. The two men agreed that the Earth does not move and that light can be bent by the atmosphere.

The key exchanges

Allegedly Dave's point first, then Robert's answer. The time jumps to that moment in the video.

  1. 19:23

    1. Ships over the horizon

Allegedly Dave argues that a Nikon P900 camera brings back into view ships that are supposed to have gone over the curve, and that he can see a lighthouse base 8 miles away that should be hidden.

Robert answered that magnification brings back part of a distant scene, which proves nothing about shape. The magnified image never recovers the whole boat, and the farther out the boat goes the more of it stays below the horizon.

“Why can't this magnifying device bring back the whole boat?”
  2. 25:55

    2. Can NASA be trusted

Allegedly Dave argues that NASA is the only proof of a globe, and that every time its footage is examined it shows errors such as green screen glitches and bubbles in so-called space.

Robert answered that he shares some suspicion of NASA, pointing to lunar orbiter photos that show only white shapes where equipment should be, but that catching someone in some falsehoods does not show that everything they say is false.

“Because NASA may fib here, fib there, that doesn't mean they're fibbing about everything.”
  3. 42:19

    3. Gyroscopes in aircraft

Allegedly Dave argues that a gyroscope is rigid in space, so an aircraft's artificial horizon should appear to roll backward as the plane follows a curved Earth, and a gyroscope left running for six hours should turn with the Earth, yet neither happens.

Robert answered that he agrees the gyroscope holds its position, and that it is the Coriolis force that keeps it there. Gravity, acting through the pendulous vanes, keeps the plane at the same height, and that correction is too slow and small for anyone to notice.

“It doesn't affect the plane, it affects the gyroscope.”
  4. 44:32

    4. Satellites from rival nations

Allegedly Dave argues that NASA lies at every opportunity, and that sitting through hours of its footage always turns up something that should not happen in zero gravity.

Robert answered that a single true photo of a spherical Earth would end the flat Earth case, which is why the claim must be all or nothing. Japan, China, India, Russia and the United States all photograph a spherical Earth from weather satellites, and these nations compete with each other rather than conspire.

“They all have weather satellites, they all take pictures of a spherical Earth.”
  5. 53:07

    5. The Chicago skyline

Allegedly Dave argues that the Chicago skyline is seen across Lake Michigan all year, and that Rob Skiba and Rick Hummer kept it in view for their whole boat trip, which a temperature inversion cannot explain.

Robert answered that Skiba's trip began at about 47 miles, where the tops of the buildings should be visible on a globe, and that in every one of Skiba's pictures the bottom of the buildings is missing and rises into view as he gets closer. The disputed case is the view from 60 miles, which only occurs in spring when cold water produces refraction.

“You won't see the bottom half of the building, but you will see the top half of the building.”
  6. 1:00:50

    6. The Lake Balaton laser

Allegedly Dave argues that his team followed a laser beam 12 km across Lake Balaton at about 2 feet above the water, with GPS-logged photos, and saw no curvature.

Robert answered that Mick West at Metabunk reviewed the Balaton results and pointed out errors, and that the smallest error in leveling the laser at its source grows with distance. He added that Dave's own beam was seen bending upward, which shows the air was affecting it.

“If you're off just a micron from that initial point of the laser beam to where you are on the other side of the lake, their whole experiment is null and void because you haven't gotten the thing level first.”
  7. 1:06:32

    7. Southern stars under a dome

Allegedly Dave argues that the southern stars sit on the lower part of a shallow dome that extends past the ice wall, and that perspective lets each region see only its own portion of the sky.

Robert answered that there are as many southern stars as northern ones, and that on a flat Earth under a dome they would have to be squeezed into a narrow band at the rim, which would distort the southern constellations.

“How are you going to be able to see constellations of the southern stars if they're all crunched up at the bottom of this dome?”
  8. 1:18:03

    8. What moves the sun

Allegedly Dave argues that there is no outer space for the sun and moon to fly off into, that they are lights in the sky, and that how they are held up is the prerogative of the Most High.

Robert answered that his geocentric model has a physical answer: a rotating universe produces inertial forces that carry the sun and stars around its axis. The heliocentrist has his own physics for the same question, and only the flat earther has none.

“A rotating universe will create inertial forces called Coriolis, centrifugal, and Euler forces.”
  9. 1:23:54

    9. Density and buoyancy

Allegedly Dave argues that objects fall because of density and buoyancy, and that Newtonian force and curved space-time are theories invented to label that tendency.

Robert answered that he accepts buoyancy, but that buoyancy only sorts layers relative to one another. If a sealed cylinder of layered liquids is thrown into the air, the layers stay in order, and something else must bring the whole system back down.

“But what causes that whole system now to fall back to the earth?”

Robert's case in 5 points

  1. 1

Weather satellites 22,000 miles up, about two and a half times the Earth's diameter away, photograph the Earth as a sphere, with no need for the more distant probes.

    26:55
  2. 2

He is a geocentrist who holds that the Earth does not move or rotate, and that the universe rotates around a fixed Earth, which he says he can prove both dynamically and geometrically.

    28:03
  3. 3

No telescope, however powerful, can see a boat beyond about 70 miles, because at some point the boat goes below the horizon.

    41:10
  4. 4

A model of the world must name the forces that move the sun and moon and change their paths with the seasons, and without them it is only a geometric picture, not a system.

    47:32
  5. 5

The Bedford Level experiment gave three different results, which shows that experiments must be repeated and peer reviewed before anyone draws a conclusion from them.

    57:25

Closing

Robert closed by agreeing that people should look for themselves, and said that each generation must test what it was taught and should welcome a new consensus when evidence shows it is better. He said the flat Earth case still had no answer on gravity or the motion of the sun, and that unless its advocates researched the dynamics of their system, sharper critics would take it apart.
