According to Sungenis, the Vatican and the Popes at the time, Pius XI and Pius XII, failed to perform the consecration as Heaven requested. Instead of conversion, society entered the decadence of the Roaring Twenties. About twenty years later, World War II began, confirming the accuracy of the prophecy. Sungenis called this a direct example of divine chastisement linked to human disobedience and papal neglect.
