Every verse is interpreted from the grammar and context of the passage. Robert Sungenis follows the grammatical-historical method, turning to typology and symbolism where the text calls for it, especially in the prophetic passages. Where the Greek textual tradition affects the meaning of a verse, the textual-critical data is weighed in the open. Key magisterial documents are cited when they bear on the text, together with the Fathers and medievals, catechisms, encyclopedias, and other dogmatic sources. Each verse carries numerous cross-references to related Scripture, giving this Commentary more cross-references than any Catholic Bible in history.

Its foundation is the traditional Catholic conviction that all Scripture is inspired by the Holy Spirit and completely inerrant, in its history no less than in its soteriology. Woven through the text are roughly one thousand of the great biblical paintings, drawn from the Gothic, Romanesque, Renaissance, Baroque, and other movements, many reproduced at full length, so the eye is drawn deeper into what the words proclaim. Each volume runs about 700 pages on a 6 by 9 inch hardback frame, made to be used for a lifetime and handed on.
