Douay-Rheims Commentary, Volume 4

The closing books of the New Testament, Second Timothy through the Apocalypse, make up the fourth and last volume of the series. Pastoral letters and prophetic visions ask different things of a commentator, and both are answered from the Greek: grammar and etymology for the letters, and for St. John's visions the grammatical-historical reading extended into typology and symbolism where the text calls for it. Where the Greek tradition affects a verse, the textual-critical evidence is set out in the open.

Magisterial documents are cited when they bear on the text, together with the Fathers and medievals, catechisms, encyclopedias and other dogmatic sources, so that a reader can see which readings the Church has already weighed in on and which remain open. Each verse carries cross-references to related Scripture. The premise throughout is that all Scripture is inspired by the Holy Spirit and inerrant in its history no less than in its soteriology.
