The claim that the Earth is a flat disk beneath a solid dome has spread widely on social media, and it deserves a serious answer rather than mockery. Commissioned by the Kolbe Center, Robert Sungenis wrote Flat Earth | Flat Wrong: An Historical, Biblical and Scientific Analysis to show, on all three grounds, why the globe Earth is the true reality. It is by far the most detailed and comprehensive treatment of the flat Earth theory ever written from the critical side of the debate.
Its 736 pages fall into three sections. The Historical section (about 100 pages) traces the movement's major figures from Rowbotham in the late 1880s to today's leaders, their motives, science, funding, and worldview, and reviews how modern science and modern theology have read Genesis 1, the shape of the Earth, and the Firmament, stumbling in ways not unlike the flat-earthers themselves. It also weighs the cultural and psychological causes and effects of both the flat Earth movement and Big Bang cosmology.
The Biblical section (about 200 pages) offers a deep exegesis of every passage bearing on the question, including Isaiah 40:22 ("the circle of the Earth") and the texts on the "four corners of the Earth," examining the original Hebrew and Greek throughout. Eighty pages are given to the Church Fathers' views on a spherical Earth, along with a full treatment of the Firmament and, for the first time in current literature, the case for the dubious origin of the "dome" concept (about 70 pages).
The Scientific section (about 400 pages) answers most of the arguments flat-earthers use to defend their model: NASA and photographs of the Earth, the Chicago skyline seen across Lake Michigan, Antarctica and the ice wall, gravity and the vacuum of space, and some 40 further topics, divided into astronomical evidence and Earth-based evidence.
