Second edition, and the change is not cosmetic: the Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition of 1966 is replaced by Sungenis's own literal translation of Romans and James from the Greek, and the first edition's exegesis is extended with further footnotes and apologetics commentaries. As the third volume of the Catholic Apologetics Study Bible, it gives Romans 151 pages of biblical text followed by more than 300 pages of commentary, and James the same treatment at a smaller scale.
The subject is soteriology, and justification in particular. The argument is that Romans is the foundation Catholic doctrine is built on, in ecclesiology as well as soteriology, rather than the text that dismantles it. Separate commentaries take up Paul's critique of Jewish works, what works of the law means at 3:28, expiation against propitiation at 3:25, how David was justified at 4:5-8, concupiscence at 7:7, predestination and free will at 8:29, eternal security at 8:39, what all Israel means at 11:25, and Phoebe the deaconess at 16:1. James is then shown to dovetail with Paul rather than contradict him, with James 2:24 handled twice, once as the passage behind the Protestant rebellion and once on its own terms. Word studies, textual analysis, patristic testimony and conciliar, papal and catechetical citations run throughout.
