Chapters 1 to 5 are newly translated from the original; chapters 6 to 21 are taken from the Revised Standard Version. The commentary runs verse by verse through all twenty-one chapters, with the grammatical nuance, the historical background and the patristic testimony kept in footnotes at the foot of the page, so the reader can follow the argument at whatever depth he wants it.
Seven appendices carry the apologetics. The Christological heresies are set against John 1:1, which is where the divinity of Christ in this Gospel stands or falls. The brothers of Jesus are taken up at 2:12. Eating the flesh of Jesus at 6:54 gets three linked treatments: the passage itself, the patristic consensus on the Eucharist, and its medieval history. The full inerrancy of Scripture is argued at 14:26, the point where John and the Synoptics appear to conflict, and the sacrament of Confession is argued from 20:23 with the Council of Trent.
