Douay-Rheims Commentary, Volume 2

Luke and Acts carry the second volume of the four-volume series. The exegesis is grammatical-historical: each verse read from the Greek grammar and the context of its passage, with recourse to typology and symbolism where prophecy is in view, and attention to the Vulgate's Latin where St. Jerome's rendering and the Greek part company. Variants in the Greek tradition are weighed openly wherever they change what a verse can mean.

Holding the whole together is the traditional Catholic position that Scripture is inspired by the Holy Spirit and inerrant in its history as much as in its doctrine of salvation, which sets the burden on the commentator to show what Luke actually wrote rather than to explain it away. Magisterial documents are cited where they touch the text, alongside the Fathers and medievals, the catechisms, encyclopedias and other dogmatic sources. Cross-references at each verse point to related Scripture, and the pages are set among reproductions of celebrated biblical paintings, Gothic through Baroque.
