Scientific Heresies and Their Effect on the Church

Fr. Paul Robinson, a priest of the Society of St. Pius X, published The Realist Guide to Religion and Science in 2018 to reconcile Catholic faith with the conclusions of modern science. This 564-page reply states two purposes at the outset: to examine modern science and its history critically, and to contend with Catholics who have accepted its major teachings at the cost of biblical revelation, the traditional consensus of the Church, or magisterial statements that disagree with it. Sungenis chose Fr. Robinson because the SSPX is the last group from which he would have expected that accommodation.

The early chapters cover science and history, modern science in critical perspective and what he calls its inside story, then recount his own exchanges with Fr. Robinson and his answers to the Q&A on Fr. Robinson's website. The long final chapter takes chapters 7 to 11 of The Realist Guide in order: fundamentalism against liberalism in biblical interpretation, geocentrism in two rounds, the age of the Earth and the Great Flood, Galileo, radiometric and stratigraphic dating, Mary Schweitzer and the T-Rex, the meaning of the Hebrew bara, the Fathers on the age of the Earth and the Flood, and the Big Bang with the cosmic microwave radiation.
