Are the modern charismatic movements genuine works of the Holy Spirit?
Answer
Some may be, but many are not. The New Testament charisms were signs authenticating the apostolic mission. They were real but also subject to strict order. Paul commands that tongues be interpreted, that women remain silent in the assembly, and that all be done for edification. Modern charismatic meetings often ignore these instructions. Ecstatic sounds or emotional displays without interpretation do not correspond to the biblical gift. Healing may occur through faith and prayer, but mass spectacles and stage performances often mix suggestion and psychology. The Church does not deny that God can grant extraordinary gifts, yet she warns against chasing signs. True spirituality is measured by humility, obedience, and love. The Spirit’s power is shown most clearly in conversion and holiness, not in noise or excitement.
