Titles of ChristAnswered

Why wasn't Christ named Emmanuel, as prophesied, instead of Jesus?

A viewer asks why Christ was named Jesus at His birth rather than Emmanuel, as Isaiah prophesied.

Answer

I think you mean to say why wasn't Jesus named Emmanuel when He was born, right? Because Isaiah 7:14 prophesies that He will be named Emmanuel. So you're thinking that He has to have the name Emmanuel given to Him when He's born. That would seem to be the case, huh? But apparently not. And I forget where it is, but He's given several names in the Old Testament besides Emmanuel. There's like half a dozen of them. Now He's called these names. I mean, you can have something as obscure as the Rose of Sharon that He's called. But there's other names like that that He's called. But obviously He's not called those names when He's born in Bethlehem. He's given the name Jesus. And that's from another prophecy. So what the prophets are doing is they're just saying a name that refers to something about Jesus or something that He will do. And El is God, and Immanu is with us. In Hebrew, Immanu is with us. And so Immanu El is God with us. That's the message that the prophet wants to get across, that God will be with us. And that's pretty heavy, actually, for Isaiah to be using this. Oh, yeah, I did do a little research on this. He's called the Branch, Zechariah 6:12: Behold the man whose name is the Branch. And then you have Isaiah 9:6, two chapters later. He's called Mighty God. He's called Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. So there's a lot of names He's called. Obviously, He's not called those when He's born. I think that answers your question, right?
