Douay-Rheims Commentary, Volume 3

Ten epistles, Romans through First Timothy, are the ground of the third volume in the four-volume series. Paul's arguments turn on tenses, cases and particles that English cannot always carry, so each verse is exegeted from the Greek first, with the Vulgate's Latin and a range of English versions set beside the Douay-Rheims for comparison. Justification, law and grace, the sacraments, church order: the disputed passages are handled from the grammar and the context rather than from a settled conclusion working backwards.

Magisterial documents are cited where they bear on a verse, with the Fathers and medievals, the catechisms, encyclopedias and other dogmatic sources quoted at length. Textual-critical data is weighed wherever the Greek manuscripts affect the meaning. Every verse carries cross-references to related Scripture, and the text is set among reproductions of great biblical paintings from the Gothic, Romanesque, Renaissance and Baroque.
