Flat Earth (Refuted)Answered

Can Scripture alone prove that the Earth is spherical?

TL;DR

Robert Sungenis answers that Scripture alone comes close: it removes every text flat-earthers rely on, and its Hebrew most likely points to a sphere, though Hebrew had no word for one. He notes that Isaiah 40:22 speaks of a circle, not a disc, that the corners and ends of the earth mean compass points and horizons, and gathers the evidence in Flat Earth, Flat Wrong.

Can Scripture alone prove that the Earth is spherical?

Answer

You can come pretty close. Scripture alone takes away every text flat-earthers use, and when you study the Hebrew words, the most likely meaning is a sphere, even though Hebrew had no word for "sphere." Start by denying flat-earthers the use of Scripture. Isaiah 40:22 says God sits above "the circle of the earth." Flat-earthers call that circle a disc. But a disc has depth, which makes it three-dimensional, and a circle is two-dimensional. The verse does not describe a disc. Some then argue that a different verse proves a sphere, where God says He will toss someone "like a ball" (Isaiah 22:18). The Hebrew there means something that rolls, which could be a log or a box as easily as a ball. Step by step, you look at how each word is used. The "corners of the earth" are the four compass points, and the "ends of the earth" are the horizons. Job 38:4 and Jeremiah 31:37 describe the foundation of the Earth as its core. Scripture never calls the Earth flat, and taken together its language points to a sphere. Do not put more weight on biblical Hebrew than it can carry. It had about 8,000 words, against more than 100,000 in Greek, and it had no word for sphere, triangle, or octagon. The Old Testament was not interested in teaching the Earth's shape, so the evidence comes in bits and pieces. I collected those pieces in Flat Earth, Flat Wrong.
