Start with what most people were taught, which is that Copernicus simplified astronomy. He did not. His system needed more epicycles than Ptolemy's did, not fewer, and it was Kepler's ellipses that eventually rescued heliocentrism from that problem. Tycho Brahe's arrangement, with the Sun carrying the planets around a stationary Earth, reproduces the observations as well as Kepler's does. Those two models make the same predictions. They differ over which body is held still, and no observation has ever separated them.
Nor is a stationary Earth a Newtonian impossibility, which is the objection I hear most. Work the mechanics through for a non-rotating Earth inside a rotating universe and the terms come out: the Coriolis and centrifugal effects appear exactly as they do in the rotating-Earth account, because in that frame the mass of the universe is what is turning. Newton himself allowed for it. Mach made it explicit. The physics does not forbid the model; the physics is indifferent between the two, and that indifference is the whole point.
Which leaves the question of why one was adopted and the other abandoned.
